Four Corners ABC

I am rather a big fan of shows like four corners on the ABC which i think report interesting views on hot topics. Last night the program was titled Afghanistan Unveiled and it was both shocking and fascinating to watch. It touched on some great points of the country and the treatment of women. Whilst my last blog was around sterotypes of Islam this doco showed the way that perhaps Islam is viewed in some ways across the globe. Where in fact it is more about the culture of a country. The program also made some good points about the way the country has in fact gone backwards since the war began. George Bush was quoted in stating that because of the war the women in Afghan are free but the poverty remains and the billions of aid are still not seen in their society. The program will be repeated on Tuesday, (see hyperlink for details) and i encourage people to watch.

Sounds really interesting. I think I would rather be free than persecuted for my gender! One would hope that as they have now fallen in line with western values that trade will increase with developed countries and in turn improve their economic development.

I'm not sure if I made myself entirely clear in my post. The statement by George Bush that "women of Afghanistan are now free" , is not something of truth, more a political ploy on his behalf to encourage support for the war.
The documentry expressed the view that while there are more women being educated that the war has had tremendous negative impacts on the afghan society and that the 'aid' the west are supposedly giving is yet to reach the people who are needing and deserving.
Rebecca you state that 'they have now fallen in line with western values' and i tend to disagree with this statement. Firstly their own culture is still very apparent and secondly i don't think that it is necessary for people to feel that they need to accept and demonstrate western values. I think that these relates to the notion that what is good for one might not be good for another.
The people of countries such as Afghan are in need of aid not a new values system.
